I’m not much of a morning person, yeah I just admitted that. I’m definitely one of those ‘needs coffee to survive type of moms’. My family knows the only way to coerce me out of bed at odd hours of the morning, is to feed me good food and a strong cup of coffee. Thank goodness we have a Keurig! It makes my coffee morning ritual oh so easy. When I was little my mom would sometimes surprise my brother and I with French Toast on Saturday mornings. These were rare weekend occurrences but it was none the less special to my brother and I.
This simple recipe is my mother’s, and I have followed it since I was 15 years old. The one spin I put on her recipe is that I used Challah bread instead of her usualWonder bread she loved so much. Back when we used to have a Wonder Bread store, do yall remember those? I actually have very fond memories of walking into the store and smelling nothing but goodness in the air. Picking out the snacks was the hardest since we were only allowed to pick a few at a time per visit. I chose the cupcakes every time. I had a soft spot for those yellow cupcakes and of course those chocolate cream filled ones. Oh goodness I want a cupcake now. I pumped up her recipe and added some delicious butterscotch caramel apples. This is so easy to make yet so delicious and decadent. Top it with some powdered sugar and maple syrup.
Although I followed my mother’s basic recipe, I decided to pump up her recipe and add some delicious butterscotch caramel apples. This is so easy to make yet so delicious and decadent. Top it with some powdered sugar and maple syrup.
When’s the last time you had french toast? Do you have any childhood memories with your family while you enjoyed these for breakfast?
- 3 Gala Apples
- ½ Cup of Butterscotch Caramel Sauce
- 1 Loaf of sliced Challah Bread
- 4 Eggs
- ½ Cup of milk
- 1 Teaspoon of Cinnamon
- 1 Stick of butter
- Peel and cut up the apples the way you prefer them in your recipe.
- In a sauce pan combine the butterscotch caramel sauce and the sliced apples. Cook on low for 7-19 minutes, or until the consistency of the apples is to your liking. Set aside for sauce to thicken.
- In a casserole dish crack 4 eggs, add cinnamon and milk and combine. Dip one by one the sliced challah bread.
- In a cast iron pan or in an large pan insert 1 tablespoon of butter (you will repeat this for every single new pan of french toast you need to make. You can pull back on the butter or add more if you like.
- Once you have prepared all of the slices you will need to simply put 1 slice on a plate, then add the caramel apples, then top with another french toast slice.
- Top with powdered sugar and maple syrup. Serve and Enjoy!
