I’m sure I won’t be the first person to admit that I have never read The book The BFG (the Big Friendly Giant). I actually feel like not having read the book gave me the ability to see the story from a new perspective being a 26-year-old with 4 kids. I took my 3 oldest to see this movie and they loved it! I got a lot of comments about how they wish they could have a big friendly giant of their own. As well as the ability to drink that upside down bubble drink, they basically want to laugh at each other fart a lot. Check out the full movie trailer of this great adventure below.
Warning, this review does reveal some spoilers, if you’ve read the book before I’m sure this will not be anything new to you.
The story starts off with a young orphan girl named Sophie who suffers from insomnia. While all the other kids are sleeping she is up reading and looking out on the town. This quirky young lady has the smarts and the courage to step outside onto her balcony to see what’s making that humming noise. Once she spots the huge creature she runs back to her bed to hide under the covers. It’s too late though the giant has seen her and takes her with him back to his home.
The graphics of her being taken to giant land were amazing. As a 3D viewer, I felt as though I was on the blanket with her heading to giant land. The graphics were amazing and the adventure to giant land was wonderful. Once I giant land she gets an up close and personal look what a Giants home looks like.
Her adventure starts here as she finds out that this particular giant is very friendly, and was once called The Big Friendly Giant by a little boy. The imagination with this story was big and with that said the way Disney was able to interpret what a dream would be and how they displayed that visually in that movie seemed to be spot on. Let me back up for a second the dream I am speaking of is what The Big Friendly Giant collects.
It’s his work and it’s how he gives back to the humans after what the other 9 giants do to them. The other Nine Giants are called Gizzardgulper, Childchewer, Maidmasher, Bloodbottler, Manhugger, Fleshlumpeater, Meatdripper, Butcher Boy, and Bonecruncher. These Giants are not friendly at all, they love to eat humans and hunt for them in the human land.
The BFG collects dreams under a beautifully big tree at the top of Giant Land. BFG isn’t an ordinary giant as you can see. He loves to collect these dreams and name them, he can recognize a dream by how it glows and acts. One thing the BFG has that the other giants don’t have is big ears, with these ears he can hear everything.
He can hear the stars, the ants, a whisper from miles and miles away, as well as what your heart beat. HE can tell by your heart beat what your heart really desires as well as if you are a good person. Sophie and The BFG team up together to defeat the other nine giants. To put them away for good so they can no longer pick on the BFG or on the humans ever again. Through some many funny scenes, you will get to see what it’s like for a dog and other humans to drink the upside down bubble drink.
I would give this movie a two thumbs up review! There is a great story here as well as some really funny scenes, the adventure is grand and the graphics are amazing! If you can watch this movie in 3D or in a Dolby Cinema for a more real life like experience. The BFG has some fun vocabulary in this movie and most of it was downright silly, to help you and your family match up his silly words with actual words you can download the Gobblefunk Glossary below.
