Hello everyone, I’m Jay! If this is your first time visiting my humble site then you will be excited to learn how much of a gym rat I am. I have been in a committed relationship with my favorite gym for going on three years now, I actually met my personal trainer through this gym. I had never had a personal trainer before I met Stephanie, and she was truly the blessing I was looking for when it came to achieving a healthier body and lifestyle. Through the year’s Stephanie has had many discussions (in other words she has had to repeat these things to me many times, I blame it on my mommy brain) about the many things you can do to have a healthy workout.
Below are the 7 things she told me that seriously blew my mind, if you are in the mist of achiving a healtheir lifestyle like I am then you will definatly want to read these.
1. Not All Workouts Are Created Equal.
Having a game plan when it comes to working out is an important task to do ahead of time. Planning your workout ahead of time and always switching it up can keep your body guessing and your muscles active. The one thing I know about my personal trainer is she knows exactly what she’s doing and she’s darn good at it. I know that any given day we workout together that no matter what crazy thing she has me do, my body is going to love it. I’m admittingly one of those people who say,
Yes! I’m so sore today! That was a great workout yesterday!
Planning your workouts ahead of time not only helps you avoid that plateau where your body is no long losing weight or gaining muscle, but it also helps you keep track of your time. I’m usually only able to workout for an hour each visit so when my trainer plans my workouts, she creates them in a way to maximize that one hour we get to our advantage.
2. Stretching and Rolling Out is a MUST.
Have you ever been at the gym or maybe in your home and thought I’m so ready to crush this workout, I’m going to rock this thing! Only to end up half way through it and cramping up or maybe just not able to reach that point you know your body can achieve? Chances are you didn’t stretch or roll out your muscles beforehand. Trust me when I say receiving a Charlie Horse only 10 minutes into your workout is not cool. Did I whine like a 2-year-old who dropped her ice cream on the hot cement? Why Yes I did.
The lesson of the day?! Stretch and roll out before and after each workout! Or suffer the dreaded Charlie Horse (ooOOoo sound scary enough? Eh-Okay).
3. Eat to lose weight.
What is this? Is this witchcraft? Who would seriously tell someone trying to lose weight to eat? Well, a very smart trainer would tell you this and you would be very wise to listen. Not only is eating a crucial part of losing weight, it’s (I’m going to sound like a mom on this one) part of keeping a healthy metabolism going in your body and also feeding your body those necessary vitamins and minerals (see that wasn’t that bad). It’s what your choosing to eat is where it becomes the challenge, stick to these quick rules when trying to figure out what to eat for your next meal.
- Eat Fresh
- Stay away from Fried
- Make sure to have a Vegetable, Complex Carb and Protein with every meal
- The Less Sweets The Better
- Water is Boss! (drink a cup of water with every meal)
Please make sure to eat your set 3 meals a day, I was horrible at making sure I ate 3 times a day. I used to only eat 1 big meal a day and it wasn’t just bad for my health but it was never satisfying. Make sure to eat a healthy portion of food at each meal and always remember to drink a cup of water with each meal.
4. The Right Shoes Can Go A Long Way.
Are you guilty like I have been with wearing the wrong athletic shoes to your workout session? There have been to many times to count right now of how many times I wore the incorrect pair of shoes to an awesome session at the gym. When you go shoe shopping ask someone knowledgeable about each shoe you are looking to purchase. Ask as many questions that can come to your mind about what types of activities each shoe is good for and remember to buy shoes that look different. That way when your rushing out the door you know which shoe is meant for what workout you are looking to crush that day.
5. Stay Hydrated.
Keep yourself hydrated! I cannot stress this enough, it makes a huge difference in your performance and recovery. If possible always keep a nice chilled water bottle on hand. Especially in the summer time when the temperatures can rise quickly. I like to pack my water bottle with a ton of ice and just let it melt as the day goes by. Visit my 5 Tips For Working Out Safely In The Heat for more information and tips on how to stay safe ni the summer heat.
6. Eat Within 1 hour after your workout is finished.
Eating within the 1 hour after your workout is finished is the best time to consume any food or beverage. My trainer explained this as the golden hour where your body is more accepting of those good vitamins and minerals you are feeding it. If you are like me and have a bit of a struggle to make it home or to a nearby food establishment, pre-make your food ahead of time and make it on the go friendly. Make sure you stick to the guidelines I stated above and you will have a great meal that will give you tons of energy afterward.
7. Working out On your Period is Good!
I know, I know, the last place you want to be when you’re on your period is at a gym let alone any place besides your own warm cozy bed. What shocked me when I talked to my personal trainer friend Steph was that working out on your period is not just good for your body but also good for your emotions. We all know how down we can get when we are on our periods, working on helps release those endorphins that help us feel good again and actually relieve the normal menstrual pain we experience.

I learned that hard way that stretching and the right shoes are a must. I had an injury last year because of both of these. As I get older stretching sure helps my muscles rebound.

Always good to be reminded of things we all know but forget … so glad it’s working well for you.

Stretching is so important. I have heard that many times over the years.

I agree with everything you said here! I didn’t know that working out on period is a good thing. Sometimes it’s just hard to move when we have it.

Congratulations for being a gym rat! I wish more people would be aware of these facts that your trainer told you about – that’d be less crazy dieting all around!

I am ready to get back in the gym and I have always wondered what the benefit of a personal trainer would be. I also had no idea that you could workout while on your period. I have always tried to avoid it.

Knowing what should be the best work out for you, having the right shoes and clothes are the important things for me to consider.

These are all great tips. I’m sure #7 is such a great time because I’ve heard it so much. I absolutely cannot for some reason find the strength to go workout on my menstrual. It is like a day I want junk food and to lay in bed ALL day. I wish I could wear tampons but I am such a heavy bleeder.
I do agree with all the other tips! Especially eating habits! No fried and fresh foods are best!

This is amazing advice! I think she is totally right and I think my trainer would say the same things!
